New Year, New Beginnings

Standard

I think this is the right time to start my blog, when I am preparing for Norooz (Iranian New year), always a happy time.  Not long to go, only few hours to 5.14 am Tuesday 20th of March

I hope the start of the new year is going to bring me hope and optimism for the future. A different life to what I have experienced so far. Perhaps life after Masterchef is going to be different.

Let’s give you some insight into our Iranian heritage and new year’s traditions which have been passed down from generation to generation.

The most important preparation is the Haft seen. “Haft” means 7 and “sins” or “seens” means S ‘s. Traditionally we set a table with seven items starting with the letter ‘s’ in Farsi language.

sabzeh(سبزه) wheat, barley or lentil sprouts growing in a dish – symbolizing rebirth
samanu (سمنو)- a sweet pudding made from wheat germ – symbolizing affluence
senjed (سنجد)- the dried fruit of the oleaster tree – symbolizing love
sir (سیر)- garlic – symbolizing medicine
sib (سیب)- apples – symbolizing beauty and health
somaq (سماق)- sumac berries – symbolizing (the color of) sunrise
serkeh (سرکه)- vinegar – symbolizing age and patience
sonbol (سنبل)- the fragrant hyacinth flower (the coming of spring)
sekkeh (سکه)- coins (prosperity and wealth)

Traditionally we have sabzi polow mahi (herbed rice with fried fish), recipe and picture will be on my next post. Yummmmm!!
